Panama City has Central America’s first and only metro system, complemented by an extensive bus network.
Metro (El Metro de Panamá)
The modern, air-conditioned metro system is the fastest way to travel across the city:
Line 1 (Red): Albrook–San Isidro (14 stations) Line 2 (Orange): San Miguelito–Nuevo Tocumen (16 stations) Line 3 is under construction (to Ciudad del Futuro, Arraiján)
- Fare: Line 1: $0.35; Line 2: $0.50; combination: $0.85
- Hours: Mon–Fri 5:00–23:00, Sat 5:00–22:00, Sun/holidays 7:00–22:00
- Metro Card: $2 initial cost, rechargeable at any station
- Free Wi-Fi, women-only carriages, air-conditioned
MiBus (Public Buses)
The integrated bus network (formerly MiBus) covers the entire city:
- Fare: $0.25–$0.75 depending on route
- Payment: Same Metro Card as the metro (cash not accepted)
- Hours: ~4:00–23:00 (reduced on weekends)
- Key interchanges: Albrook Terminal, 5 de Mayo, San Miguelito
Taxis and Ride-sharing
- Uber and DiDi — widely available and the recommended option for tourists
- Official taxis: Yellow, metered (~$1.50 start + $0.50/km). Negotiate the fare beforehand if no meter
- Airport taxis: Official taxi booths inside Tocumen arrivals; fixed rates ~$30–35 to city centre
- InDrive — another ride-sharing option (negotiate price in app)
Intercity Buses
The Albrook Bus Terminal is the main hub for long-distance buses:
- To David (7 hours): ~$15–20
- To Colón (1.5 hours): ~$3–5
- To Bocas del Toro: ~$25–30
- To Santiago (3 hours): ~$8–10
Tips
- The Metro is the cleanest and fastest option — use it for long corridors
- Download the Metro de Panamá app for maps and schedules
- Taxis (especially at the airport) may overcharge — use Uber or the official taxi booths
- The Metro Card works on both metro and MiBus (load at any station)
- Avoid rush hour (7:00–9:00, 16:30–18:30) when the metro can be packed
- Casco Viejo is walkable; the metro stops at 5 de Mayo station nearby
